Big Pumpkins: Using Computer Models to Investigate Inheritance and Variation in the Garden

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Come explore the phenomenon of a giant pumpkin and deepen your understanding of heredity! We will observe the variation of traits in plants. Then use an interactive computer model to grow the biggest virtual pumpkin, collecting data on the size and weight of pumpkins over many generations. Use the data as evidence to explain that big pumpkins result from inherited traits influenced by the environment. Please bring a laptop to access the NetLogo computer model. Targets standards in grades 1, 3, 5
